After several delays, the Apple TV 4K has Finally got a tvOS software update for better projector performance.
The new tvOS 18.2 update gives users the ability to adjust aspect ratios, with native support for seven ratios and an automatic mode that adjusts aspect ratio based on information received via HDMI.
The supported aspect ratios are 16:9, 21:9, 2.37:1, 2.39:1, 2.40:1, DCI 4K and 32:9 – all of which can be manually set to best suit your home theater equipment.
If FlatpanelsHD mentions that the expanded support for wide and ultrawide aspect ratios is intended for projectors with anamorphic lenses, but the new features appear to work with most ultrawide PC monitors as well.
Also included in the update are some downright adorable Snoopy wallpapers. In one, the famous dog floats among a galaxy, dressed in an orange astronaut suit.
However, to access these types of screensavers you need an Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) or higher. Curse you, Red Baron!
We’re also still waiting for the full screen saver update. The new Apple Originals and TV+ screensavers, including one from the science fiction series Foundationplus the Music and Soundscapes screen savers, will be further delayed until 2025, so probably with tvOS 18.3.
Your Apple TV should automatically download and apply the update in standby, provided you have enabled the setting in your system menu.
If you need to install the update manually, simply follow these steps: navigate to the Settings app > click System > then click Software Updates > then select Download and Install.
